So why call it preshampoo? Can’t blame people for using it that way if that’s what it’s called. The instructions say, “Apply to damp hair, prior to shampoo. Wait 5-10 minutes. Rinse and follow with EverPure Bond Repair Shampoo and Conditioner.” But yet, you say you spoke with a few companies & they told you that’s not the way it’s supposed to be used. That makes no sense to me. Maybe they need to be sued

Does this sound like a good routine?: hair oiling, shampoo once, use bond repair product, shampoo again, hair mask, conditioner, rinse, then apply leave in conditioner and heat protection and follow with styling as desired?

I feel pre shampooing makes my hair very brittle and straggly so I just rinse with warm water really well instead of shampooing before the bonding treatment.

OK, but when I do this, and I wash out the shampoo, my hair is in one giant tangling knot because it’s so fine. I can’t equally apply the bonding treatment afterwards because if I tried to brush it out, I would rip out so much of my hair. What do I do, should I condition and rinse out the conditioner and then apply it and then re-shampoo

I’ve been trying this system for the last two weeks. I tried it how the directions say to try it and then tried it the way she says to do it and I can’t tell a single difference. Honestly my Mane n Tail Glossing Shampoo and Conditioner out do this a million to one

April 25 2025

  helenhart4368

It’s probably best to use as instructed. It makes sense to have this pre shampoo treatment for very weak and damaged hair to help protect it from the shampoo. Also, you might be assuming a lot of styling products on the hair or something, but that might not often be the case.

Thank you Abby. I just purchased the L’Oréal bond repair and the shampoo and conditioner. I’ve used it twice the way the instructions say and then I saw this video. My hair felt nice but it makes sense to put it on after removing other products like leave in conditioner. Also thanks for sharing how to use K18 properly. I use so much less product now and it seems like more after spreading it on my palms until they are all white with product. I only have to use 2 pumps to cover all of my hair.

Used the Redken Acidic Bond Treatment after the shampoo and it completely dried out my hair. So maybe it’s better to use the product the way the brand supposes you to do! It might be too aggressive to not wash it out with shampoo

I use it as directed, but I don’t have product buildup, and usually wash my hair every other day. It does seem to work well on my hair, but I’ll try doing it next time on freshly cleansed hair to see if it makes a difference.

Ugh, why do they do that?! Also I have gotten into the habit of washing twice, should I still be doing that with a bond repair?

April 25 2025

  rachel.wilson

I’m a former colorist as well, and I want to explain for people wondering why the companies market this as a pre-shampoo treatment. I was in the Ola Plex Facebook group for professionals when Ola Plex first came out and I had a front row seat to this problem. The reason is because when Olaplex first came out, people were thinking they could replace their conditioner with bond treatment. They were treating OlaPlex number 3 like a conditioner because it has a deceptively creamy texture. So they would shampoo, use the bond treatment, and then wonder why their hair felt dry and brittle after they dried it. This led to a huge amount of negative reviews from people who were incorrectly using the product as a conditioner. So Olaplex thought the best way to correct this was to tell people to use the treatments before shampoo so that they would naturally feel the need to still use the conditioner after the shampoo, and stop trying to use it as a conditioner. Definitely not perfect, but product education overwhelms the average consumer. Abbey’s audience are people seeking product education, of course it won’t make sense to us

You cannot do this with the Redken bond pre treatment unless you shampoo again after applying it. The Redken feels kinda greasy and won’t go away just with water. So you would have to shampoo twice

Bought the Redken one today and used it how you suggest! When I run out I may try the L’Oréal one given they are basically the same product.

So we shampoo add the pre shampoo than after 5 to 10 minutes shampoo again and follow with the conditioner ? I have the 3 step system based off of one of your videos. I just want to use it correctly. I also use K18 every so many washes because of you and I love it . Thank you for helping us .

So they’re marketing it in a way that consumers won’t get toe best results because consumers were already using it incorrectly? You’re using it wrong, use it wrong this way instead? It seems like an easy fix. Indicate in the usage instructions on the bottle to shampoo, then use the bond repair, then follow with conditioner. That doesn’t seem complicated to me. If the average consumer is really not capable of understanding those simple instructions, then, survival of the fittest.

April 25 2025

The Redken acidic concentrate treatment, it only says wet your hair, then put it on, then shampoo and condition, and in Redken, I have the shampoo, the Redken acidic bonding concentrate treatment, the 5 min leave in treatment and the leave in conditioner, NOT THE REDKEN BONDING ACIDIC CONDITIONER. ITS FOR MY HAIR, YES I USE K18, BUT STILL I THINK I CAN DO MORE TO MY HAIR TO GET IT HEALTY.I WAS JUST WONDERING ABOUT THE REDKEN ACIDIC BONDING CONCENTRATE TREATMENT, AND WOW THAT STUFF COST A ARM AND A LEG. BUT SO DOES THE REDKEN TRIO SET THAT I COULD GET AT RETAIL BOX BUT THE OTHER TREATMENT IS AT A WHOLE OTHER ONLINE HAIR SHOP. I DID NOT EVEN NOW THAT I WOULD FIND IT HERE .

April 25 2025

5
  C1nderfire

THEN apply conditioner?! Aha moment. I was wondering why my hair was so naughty after using the concentrate after shampoo! I wasn’t applying the conditioner after the allotted amount of time. So essentially it works like K 18.
