Wait, I had been looking at this from a photography standpoint and just noticed the headphone jack to go along with the limited video options......

Great review, Gordon - very helpful. Thanks.
Personally I think this will be a great upgrade from my 80D. I prefer to blow the budget on great glass rather than on a body (an L series lens could last a lifetime - or more at my age, while bodies generally get replaced every 5 years or so), so this kit would be a good way onto the RF system.

What a gigantic piece of shit. This is the best canon could do with an entry level full frame... keep that in your mind people
April 28 2025
Is it compatible with the EF-M lens ? It was a kit lens I got with The Canon M6 Camera.
April 28 2025
Come on Gordon...budget? in what convoluted world of declining camera sales is $1400.00 a budget proposition?
April 28 2025
Idd canon m50 uses the LPE-12 batteries , while the RP uses the LPE-17. So a warning for the people who want to use the same batteries
April 28 2025
Magnesium shell ? Have you done the tongue test...metal always feels colder than plastic apart from titanium.

Thanks for the video! I really like your simple straight to the point format. But, I need to comment the same thing I commented with Tony Northrup, because is misinformation. (Not saying on purpose). But these cameras don’t do “cropped 4K” videos. You either have 4K or you have another resolution. You mean a cropped sensor when filming 4K. You still get 4K resolution out of them. What you mean is that Canon doesn’t super sample their 4K video for whatever reason, like Sony or other brands does. IMO, we need to stop treating these cropped sensors as a big deal for quality as some of the very best 4K videos you will see are recorded with a cropped sensor. I do understand the lens factor and how much it zooms etc. But I believe that is a different aspect for functionality not quality or resolution.
Just my two cents man. And if you are ever in the Hollywood area, let me know. I’ll buy you a round of coffee.

I miss your voice man, First time I listen to you when you do the review of nikon d90 10 years ago. You’re the most detailed reviews I had seen back then. More power!

Looks pretty good except for the stupid small battery. Nobody wants to see weight savings at the cost of battery life.
April 28 2025
Things to consider before buy it:
-Same sensor of 6D Mk II (Is no so good)
-No magnesium alloy
-One SD card slot
-Slow burst
-No FHD 120p for slow motion
-1MP aprox on the screen
-Native ISO range is up to 40,000 and expansion 102,400
-Poor battery life
-Life of 100,000 cycles (Like EOS Rebel line up)
-No secondary screen
-No battery grip (the one available is only for presentation)

Great review and wonderfully thorough, although I was cringing every time you moved the camera around on that rough surface. I wonder what the bottom of that camera looks like now. Anyway, as reviews go you are certainly the man to listen to.

Gorden i watched the whole video thinking what did you say at the beginning, replayed it twice 1299 USD ,and 1399 GBP what are we being conned . Thats worse than apples exchange rate ,our glorious British pound have always worth much more then the USD
April 28 2025
Impressive camera, relatively cheap, and tempting for me to switch from my Fuji system
April 28 2025
24 fps is not available at 1080p and no dual auto focus on 4k ...
M50 have 24 fps at 1080p ...

Hi Gordon, regarding Canon’s patent of flippy screen. This could be it: https://patents.google.com/patent/US8018517
April 28 2025
A lot of Canon fans are just settling it seems. You should expect & want more instead of explaining why this is ok.
April 28 2025
Canon made a bit of a mess out of the video and frame rates. I would rather see 1080p work with 24fps and EF-S lenses, instead of having cropped 4K without DPAF. I really hope there will be some firmware updates given the "outrage". Looking forward to some in-depth reviews tho. Nice video Gordon.

How is the AUDIO quality compared to M50?
M50 is surprising pretty good. Most Canons are horrible.
April 28 2025
put it right behind your rear wheel then get into your car and REVERSE over the camera and crush it then get out of your car and forget what you just did.
April 28 2025
If you want to get a full frame mirrorless camera for cheap, get an A7II. They’re on sale at best-buy for $999 with a kit lens. Other companies, such as B&H and Adorama, have similar sales.
April 28 2025
It’s another canon launch, a new, overpriced camera, with 3 year old technology, being advertised as ‘new,’ and ‘innovating.’
April 28 2025
My favorite feature of the EOS R is the instant video record button. Does this work on the EOS RiP?
April 28 2025
I love it. I am absolutely sure it will sell like crazy and will be a game changer for the whole market. These full frame-mirrorless cameras are terribly overpriced for what they are, and the lenses just keep getting bigger and clumsier. And their interfaces suck. Canon seems to address these issues. I am glad to see canon back in the game.

how do you think the eos 6d mark 1 price will drop as soon as this one goes out? I need to buy an eos 6d until march 5 and I wonder if I should wait
April 28 2025
I fear Canon are going to end up with the same problem they had with DSLRs, too many models. Sony and Nikon have it right, a budget model, high end model and video centric model (for the Sony a7s at least). In years to come I can see Canon having to restrict the features and performance of this camera so as not to compete with the EOS R. I think they would have done a lot better to have combined the 2.
April 28 2025
What I see on the horizon is the Sony Medium Format Camera at a similar price point. Digital 35mm ( laughingly called "Full Frame" ) is basically dead. It is time to start putting money away in anticipation of the new Medium Format Cameras from the usual suspects! ( In a few years, the Canon EOS-1DX Mark II will be for sale on ebay for less than $200.00! )

What do you think about yourself??? Hands on review without having the camara??? YouTube must ban these kind of pricks.....
April 28 2025
1. Sorry you got me confused. Did you say that EOS RP does not record 1080p 60 fps with EF lenses (like EF 16-35 2.8 L) - only with RF lenses?
2. Also: what happens when you connect it to iPad Pro with USB-C? Does it allow to transfer both images and videos without a problem? Does it charge the battery as well, perhaps?
April 28 2025
Gordon in appreciate your balanced review. You have acknowledged the RP’s short comings while addressing some of its stronger points.
April 28 2025
250 shots from that puny battery ? Are you serious ?and is priced 1200$ in India it cost 1,60,000₹
April 28 2025
Great review, thanks! To my astonishment I actually bought the RP. I’ve been saving for a Sony A7III, but price-point, ergonomics, full touch-enabled functionality, and the 3-axis tilt screen, won out on my personal Pro-&-Con matrix... and I love shooting the RP. I may end up getting an A7lV when it hits, but the only real missing elements for me is IBIS, Video time limit, and crop 4k. The EG-1 extender is like Clark Kent’s phonebooth, completely transforms the personality of this camera, especially with big glass. I feel like I’m back with my EOS 620 (my last Canon lol) and just enjoying photography again!
April 28 2025
Why does the RP have Spot AF but the R does not? I know you can make your AF point “small” on the R but it still does not appear as small/precise as Spot AF on the RP. Am I missing something?
April 28 2025
hello canon eos rp 24-105 f4 fujifilm x-h1 + 16 55 f2.8 Which machine do you prefer?
April 28 2025
Canon RP is indeed an interesting camera. Unlike mentioned in the video from Gordon the free software that comes with the camera actually does stack the pictures taken using the focus bracketing function as explained here: https://youtu.be/5EClL9SDY-k . As a Nikon system and Z6 owner I do miss the stacking software and wonder why Nikon has the focus stacking support but no software to back that function...trying out the Canon RP with the 35mm f1.8 RF lens could be a tempting way to try another system..thank you Gordon for the review..
April 28 2025
Thanks Gordon for a nice review. If you where to choose between EOS RP and EOS M6 mark II, what whould you choose?
April 28 2025
Great review, but do you honestly think the price is reasonable? After all we pay more GBP than the Americans do in dollars, and it really is far too pricey for what you get, maybe £500 max. But of course we know we get ripped off in the UK. Cheers for the review.
