This helped me understand alot but im too slow to understand the v30-v90 thing in relation to what im intending on recording. I want to shoot 4k 30fps on my dji osmo, from my understanding i would require a v60+ but not 100% sure a v30 wouldnt work. Anyone know if a v30 would effectively shoot 4k 30 fps?

As a retired Licensed Broadcast Engineer, I agree with everything that Philip said except for one statement. If the camera I shoot with can only do 30 frames per second as its top speed, of course, that what I will use., never 24 frames per second except if I am looking to replicate the low end quality of film. If you can with your camera, use 60 frames per second do so for better looking video. Its also easier to edit. That is, your edit point is twice as large and may make the difference between good edits and poor edits. Granted, the volume of the file will be twice as much as with 30 frames. If I can, I use 128 sized cards if the camera can handle it. Just set your editor to have 60 frames per second as the normal video rate and the video will not run fast. Leaving your video editor at 30 frames per second will have the video running twice as fast. Again, other than for a special effect, dont shoot 24 frames per second. This speed was picked for film because of the audio. Silent f

I love the video and this clears up so much but i do have a question, is the read speed is shows as 300mb, then how does the U3 showing a sustained read speed of 30mb factor in? Is it like no matter your connection its promising at least 30mb but can get up to 300mb/s?

This is by far the most informative video on this topic. I was about to purchase a V90 SD card, but after watching this, I realized that it’s completely unnecessary for the Sony A6700.
For 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 recording at 200Mbps, the camera only requires:
V30 for 60fps
V60 for 120fps (280Mbps)
A V90 card is only required for slow motion at maximum FPS, making it an unnecessary expense for me. I also confirmed this by testing different SD cards in the camera, when using a slower card and adjusting the recording settings, the A6700 itself provides guidance in the menu. It recommends a V30 for standard recording and a V60 for slow-motion at 280Mbps.
This video saved me from spending extra money on storage that I wouldn’t actually benefit from. Thanks for the excellent breakdown!

My action camera cuts the files up to 3GB a piece. I like that because most USB flash drives will only let you transfer a file thats under 4GB per file. I end up having to use a clunky old school USB disk drive to store my other files that are larger.

That that’s exactly what I do. I use the 128V 60 one thing I would add is don’t buy brands of cards. You’ve never heard of. I bought some no-name cards that were on sale on Amazon and I had one fail. I have never had that issue withLexar Kingston, Samsung, and other major cards.

My Canon EOS-R, shoot its version of 4K (3840 x 2160) 30 fps eats SD alive! A recent long take (for me) file at 13 minutes created a 46GB file. (2nd cam is Pana GH4) Typical long form recipe (8 to 10 minutes) eats around 150GB. Seriously running out of disk to store all this stuff.

In theory you can format an sdhc card in your computer as exFAT and itll become an sdxc card. Whether your camera still accept it is another matter.

I make automotive videos and I just bought a new gopro hero 13 camera. I buy a normal scandisk ultra card and my camera tell me its too slow. I need a v30 or more card. I wish gopro had told me this before I bought a card.
