Venom foi criado por David Michelinie, Mike Zeck e Todd McFarlane em 1984, originalmente uma criatura alienígena, chamada Simbionte Klyntar, sua primeira aparição foi na minissérie Guerras Secretas, onde surgiu na forma do icônico uniforme negro do Homem-Aranha (que desconhecia que este era uma criatura viva).

O suposto "traje" aumentava os poderes do herói, mas também sua agressividade.

Ao descobrir que se tratava de um ser vivo que se alimenta da energia de seus hospedeiros para sobreviver, o herói se desligou da criatura, que acabou fundindo-se a Eddie Brock, um jornalista fracassado que odiava tanto o Homem-Aranha, quanto seu alter-ego Peter Parker.
A origem de Brock como Venom foi em 1988, e desde então se tornou um dos piores inimigos do herói aracnídeo.
