That legend goes back at least 50 years. Stihl made an electric chainsaw in 1926; 99 years ago. A couple of high end Stihl AC corded electrics here are about 25 years old. Battery powered chainsaws go back many decades but modern ones use Lithium Ion batteries Many older and some modern electrics use less cutting teeth than a gas saw. ***Maybe that is why the legend is even more weird about chaps Wood Shop teacher in 7th grade use to cut cedar pieces from logs with an electric chainsaw and showed it cuts through old chaps back in the dark ages

People wanting refund as the chaps got destroyed by the chainsaw is amusing. And did not know they wear out.

Wood makes a good backing to cut on. Leg flesh not so much, it would help the chap gather up into the chain. Don’t recommend testing that theory

I have been lucky so far, after 10 years i have only put the saw in my work boots a few times.

I always assumed chaps were only for quick little accidents like a broken chain whipping around or like when your saw pops up at you... I guess i was right. Always be careful where you put your legs relative to a saw!

Might be an argument to stick with gas chainsaws, safety gear actually works.

Ive taken a chainsaw to the leg before. Just nicked my knee, but still took a 2 inch long strip pf flesh out of my skin and a quarter inch deep. I wrapped it up and went back to what i was doing. Was definitely more disappointed I ruined the pants I bought the day before.

I rarely use a chainsaw and when I do have never worn chaps its probably stupid but I cant justify the purchase for a couple limbs or small logs going in a cleanup fire once or twice every 5 years or so.

Ive nicked my leg a few times over many years. Each time, it was near the end of a long day and I was dog tired. Lesson learned there. Each time, the chain was pretty dull. I ripped my coveralls and denim jeans but never got more than a light scratch myself. I really should dust off the chaps I bought years ago. Love the humorous videos!

Trying the other leg of the chaps with a gas/oil saw would be cool.

Well this video was points less not only did you not test the old ones against a gas saw to see if the results were the same. You never tested the electric saw against a new pair to verify the claims. You just made sure to check if people read the warnings they get with chaps.

FYI: I wouldnt throw them away- Id destroy them. Too many people would just look and go "why is some idiot throwing away a perfectly good pair of chaps?"

Electric chainsaws could have safety features, if the chain has too much restistance like fibers getting sucked it it would stop instead of just powering trough it. Maybe some kind electrical thing? One point is on your hand using the chainsaw, one is on the chain, if you hit the chain with part of your body it would connect the circuit and instantly stop the chainsaw :D Edit, i think i found out that Stihl and Husqvarna has something motor monitoring like that but not my idea that works like SawStop for tablesaws. Someone at Stihl or Husqvarna take my idea to the engineers and maybe receive nice bonus on your next months pay :) Ive heard some companies reward their workers being innovative

The chain on the electric saws are much narrower than the gas powered saws so that may make it easier to cut through. In the end though, the chaps are meant to prevent injury from the chain contacting your leg after the intended cut is finished and the saw chain is winding down. I’ve seen injuries from that before chaps were invented and they’re pretty messy.

The chaps are designed to protect from glancing blows and minor accidents, not from taking a full speed blade and ramming it into your leg at full strength.

So just what "wears out" chaps? Is time a factor? Ive had one pair of chaps (9 layer) about 10 years, the other (7 layer) about 15 years. But I probably use them no more than 3-4 times a year. Neither one is visibly damaged. Stored inside a plastic tote. My understanding is that its the length of the kevlar fibers that confound and stop the chain. So do the fibers break down over time? Or is it the exposure to sun, the occasional nicks with vegetation, etc., that make them as ineffective as what we just saw here?

Thank you for that important demonstration on how easily your electric chainsaw cut its way through your old chainsaw chaps. Because of this I am going to be really careful to make sure not to let the chain get near my chaps. The way it cut through your chaps I am sure you would have bled to death before help could arrive. I think when using a chainsaw, it is very smart to have a friend close by and a well-equipped first aid kit.

My electric chainsaw has no chain brake of any kind. Its very snall and lets me get away with a lot but i rexpect the extra damage that lack.of safety features could do to me
