This is A+ content, thanks Streaky! I think up til now it’s often been a problem getting concise info that’s down to earth and to the point, because people can be so possessive and secretive about their ‘secret sauce’ ideas. I think a sign of a true master is one who can break things down simply...

Does the mastering engineer mind -2db’s worth of comp? Most mastering engineers seem to want this to stay in their realm?

This literally applies to maybe 2% of parallel compression cases. I make techno, I just saw a veteran have 16db of reduction. I myself go for 6-8, and the snapiness of attack depends on the punchiness of the kick defined in the mix, while the release depends on the kick pattern and bpm. Ignore these “one-trick-covers-all” advices and learn how to hear and use compression. Your world will open up. :)

Step 4 : Use your ears

May 02 2025

4
  memeswillneverdie

This is a great starting point (yes I understand it’s short form so the capacity for nuance is limited) but it’s not all their is, what about parallel compression, high passing the internal sidechain to stop the kick from driving the compressor, when using a compressor with a fully variable release setting it to a subdivision of the bpm of the song, using eq before the compression (or eq the sidechain if it’s available which will sound different but a similar idea) to push certain frequencies into the compressor, adding subtle saturation after the compressor to provide some more subtle compression and ‘density’ caused by the added harmonics etc etc. Remember in audio there is never one way to do something, if anyone tells you that their lying, so try this out if it works, great but I urge anyone to experiment, save your project as a copy and mess with it, smash it to death and find the ideal compression settings then back it off to sensible levels, oversaturate it to hell and back to know what that sounds like, EQ like a madman until you can bare it and then fine tune to something actually good. Remember this field is a perfect balance between science and creativity so learn the tools, learn the craft, practise like hell and ultimately, experiment, have fun and make great music.

Radio stations use more limiting which is why music is so boxiey sounding on radio can be nice but at times it takes the dynamics out of the music to much agc is more slow compressior not as harsh as some limiters

May 02 2025

5
  joshcoxmusic

true! 4 to 1 probably would be more gluey in a sense. 2 to 1 may be preferable for transparency sometimes tho

Should the Compressor Cocktail technique be done on a mix bus or is that for mastering compression?
