You’ve probably brought your new feline friend home, and then suddenly realized that he or she needs to be litter trained! Going to the bathroom is something that we take for granted, so it’s just a matter of showing your new furry friend the box and away they go? Not so fast! A lot of cats do understand what to do, you show them the box, and they know what to do next. However, it’s not normal for a cat that’s under 4 weeks or so in age to know what to do. And, contrary to popular belief, a mother does not teach the kittens what to do. It’s built into their natural instincts. After about four weeks, they will dig in the dirt (if you allow them to be an outdoor cat) or dry materials found around the home. This is why they will take to a litter box so quickly. When preparing to bring your kitten home for the first time, make sure that you’ve set up a place just for them. Like all small animals, they will want to feel safe and protected. This is especially true if you have other animals in the house, including other cats, either young or old. Their room should have a place to sleep, clean water, and a litter box. Ideally, the litter box should be large enough to accommodate them as they grow into full size. Be sure that the box it not too tall or too hard to get into, it doesn’t help your kitten learn if it’s a struggle to use. If you can keep the same familiar box as they turn into adults, and then later elder cats, that will make things easier. Do not use a self-cleaning litter box, or one that has mechanical parts in it when teaching your kitten. They are easily frightened, and a negative experience may lead them to not want to use the box now or later – and that’s a problem you don’t want to have! There are a number of litter boxes with hoods or roofs on them that have appeared on the market in the last few years – don’t use those. That type of litter box will trap smells and dust inside. When they go to scratch, the dust can’t go anywhere. It may cause them to sneeze, cough, get their eyes irritated and in general, have a bad experience. If you ever observe your cat half in and half out of the box, with their rear-end in the box you know for sure that a covered litter box will not work for your feline friend. Picking the right litter is something that you can figure out by trial and error. So when starting out, don’t buy those large 25 or 50 pound bags. Start small, with bags of various types to see what your cat likes best. The majority of cats like a litter that clumps, it’s recommended to try that first. You should avoid using crystalized cat litter, as it typically has sharp edges that will be uncomfortable to little kitten paws. If you’ve decided to become a cat Mom or cat Dad to a stray, here’s a trick. When you are litter training them, include some dirt in the box, and decrease the ratio of dirt to litter as they become more used to it. Some litters are scented, and believe it or not, it’s for the cat’s nose, not the human’s! Some cats like a clean, fresh scent, but not all of them, so test to see what works the best for your kitten or cat. Lastly, remember to be patient. It can take some time for them to get the hang of things, especially if they are newborns or adopted. It’s a strange new world that they’re coming into, and they’ll need time to adjust. Show them that they have a safe place to sleep, eat, and do their business, and they’ll learn how to use a litter box in no time at all!
