This sample oven was provided for free for me to review. Can this oven compete with the Oonis and Gozneys of the world? Let's find out. In this video, I unbox the Pizza Party 70x70 and discover that I definitely need a helper because this thing is heavy! There was a little more Styrofoam than I'd like in the packaging, but it might have been unavoidable since there are fragile parts, including the biscotto stones that form the floor of the oven. I bought some kiln-dried cherry and birch hardwood and went to work splitting the pieces. I started my fire with fire starter bricks and used the oven's door to help retain heat. Then I added more firewood about every 15 minutes. After about 90 minutes, the floor of the oven was hot enough to start cooking pizza. This is quite a bit longer than the 30 minutes of preheat time that you'd expect in most propane-fueled pizza ovens, but it's to be expected with a wood-fired oven. One nitpick about the oven door is that it's made of thin steel that expands when hot, which makes manipulating the door tricky at times. I had some difficulty initially with this oven mostly because the documentation left a lot to be desired. There are some helpful videos on the Pizza Party website, but you have to go hunting for them. In the end, I made some fantastic Neapolitan pizza with this oven and recommend it despite the shortcomings of the documentation. Cooking with wood is not as fast or convenient as cooking with propane, but there is something romantic about the challenge of doing things the traditional way!
