Alum block is a must. I feel like I could take or leave pre-shave oil, but it does elevate the experience. Good shave cream or soap also a must. I have shaved with just water and my Henson. It was a massively less good experience.

My philosophy when it comes to shaving soaps is simple; buy high-end artisan soaps and use very little. I do this by measuring my soap and bowl lathering. My secret recipe is 1/16 tsp of soap to 1/2 Tbsp of distilled water. Works beautifully every time for my 3-pass shave.
