I was raised on iceberg lettuce not even knowing it was called iceberg. I spent many nights sitting alone at the dinner table in a face off with that nasty spinach. I prayed for bedtime those nights...

I thought arugula was a lettuce too. Then there is spring mix which looks like what I get when I pull weeds in the yard.

I am in the area of CA where all those different greens are grown for the rest of the country. It is amazing to see the workers harvesting them. I no longer take for granted where the lettuce, arugula, and everything else comes from.

My mom FOR REAL used to tell me that the kale/green lettuce that was on the side of my plate when I ordered chicken fingers “was just a garnish, don’t eat it”. She would literally rolls her eyes in disgust when I would show curiosity about a green food lol

This is why I laugh when health gurus talk about the good old days when everything was farm to table, like we just ate whatever for the longest time

My mom made a fancy salad that consisted of a bed of iceberg lettuce with a half of a pear from a can on top, filled with cottage cheese and covered with Russian dressing. So special.

Grew up on canned spinach. Was not bad. Actually, I liked it. That is all I knew and tasted of spinach. In my adult years, I was confused by fresh spinach. Thought it had to be processed, canned for consumption. Once I got it figured out, never touching the canned stuff again. Sometimes I shred or chop spinach for sandwiches or soups, stews.

Ugh, that frozen spinach in a box! You brought up a horrible memory of my childhood! Based on that, I thought I hated spinach. But, like many other vegetables, when I ate my first straight from the ground and not canned or frozen veggie, I found out that many of them are quite delicious!

First time I heard of Arugula was in the Steve Martin movie “My Blue Heaven” where he was a mobster at the grocery store asking if they had Arugula, and had to explain that it was a vegetable. Years later, when I finally thought of the store, I was like oh that’s what he was talking about!

I know when and where it started. CA in late 70s. I remember moving to Palo Alto California in 1978 at age 16 and being shocked that the produce section was 4 times larger than in OH or MN or NJ grocery stores. I just stood there gazing at mountains of bright colored veg all around me, piled 10 feet tall There was fresh pineapple, avocados and artichokes! And, yes, like 12 kinds of leafy greens!! There were things I couldn’t even name! Health food stores and restaurants were in fashion. Wheat berry bread was a thing. Everyone ate piles of sprouts on salads and sandwiches. Anyone who has ever visited CA goes back home and feels their grocery store produce section is sad. All “good” restaurants around the country had salad bars and hanging fern plants!!

Dandelion leaves, which sell for a boatload of money at the farmers market, were eaten as salad during the Great Depression. With the cost of food going up, I’ve been eyeing up the dandelions that are coming up outside.

Ah, when I moved to germany, and bought greens from the farmer’s markets that a friend pointed to. I only knew OF spinach from popeye…never ate it before…and it was several months before I realized that yummy lettuce I kept buying was spinach!
