I want to inform everyone that a likely carcinogenic and tumor-causing herbicide named Cheetah Pro is being sprayed in large, high-traffic areas of our local parks. I have observed people and pets walking on the sprayed surfaces within seconds of application. I have photo and video documentation.nnFlazasulfuron, the active ingredient in Cheetah Pro, has been classified as a Category 2 herbicide by the World Health Organization (WHO), indicating its acute toxicity to humans. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has raised concerns about the potential carcinogenicity of flazasulfuron, based on animal studies showing an increased incidence of tumors in rodents exposed to high doses of the herbicide. nnResearch published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that flazasulfuron can persist in soil and water, posing potential risks to ecosystems and human health through bioaccumulation in food chains. Additionally, chronic exposure to flazasulfuron has been associated with adverse effects on the liver and reproductive system in animal studies, raising concerns about its potential long-term impacts on human health. It can cause respiratory issues, skin irritation and environmental harm, disrupting ecosystems and threatening pollinators like bees and butterflies. nnHave we learned nothing from the lymphoma cancer and court cases from RoundUp? It is very disappointing to see the same occuring at our local parks, this time utilizing a chemical which is causing lawsuits and health complications already well documented in Southern California.nnI am both saddened and angry about this for so many reasons. If you have kids and use the playground, be cautious as well as I’ve seen them spraying areas where weeds grow. If you have pets who meander the park you might consider keeping them out of areas where plants are not growing and clean their paws when you get home. It's also heartbreaking to watch birds and squirrels unknowingly feed on seeds and walk on areas treated with this herbicide, unaware of the harmful chemicals they are ingesting. nnI started noticing the spraying on my morning walks by Chavez Park. On one occasion I approached the workers from Parkwood, who were doing the spraying, and asked them what they were spraying and why. They advised me that it was Cheetah Pro, an herbicide used to kill weeds. One of them even told me (as he was spraying around a bench that people sit on) not to worry, that after it dries it is harmless. I asked them which day of the week they come to spray so I could avoid those days but they said they don’t have a set schedule. On another occasion I asked another worker and they also stated they were using Cheetah Pro. nnTheir staff does not utilize Proper Protective Equipment (PPE) for their own health. This is very concerning, as they are receiving a high level of workplace exposure. Chemical applicators require a Qualified Applicator Licensee (QAL) at their company. To receive a QAL, they must take a weekend course and exam. The most basic component of the QAL exam is PPE. The person under whose license this work is taking place should be ensuring that at the very least, their workers are protected with basic PPE, such as masks or respirators. nnParkwood, the company doing the spraying, isn't taking basic precautions like blocking off treated areas, putting everyone at risk of exposure. On multiple occasions I have seen a worker spraying an area and not 2 seconds after, someone walking by with their dog stepping on the same area that was just sprayed. nnI want to be clear that this is not a process nor a company unique to Chavez Park. I have also noticed such herbicide applications done at Drake Park and at Bluff Park where the yoga classes take place.nnThe overuse of such harmful chemicals is unnecessary. There are safe, non-toxic alternatives that could be used instead. While I am unaware of the budget constraints of the City Contract, I am certain they should not be prioritized beyond the health of the public, their pets, wildlife and the environment.
