do you have to take the spaceship (or astronaut) pieces out to build the astronaut (or the spaceship)? cause im confused..

So I thought it was missing pieces...i started building the astronaut but he was backwards vs what the instructions said...then i started building the mini spaceship. I started trying to build the space shuttle & realized you have to take it apart to build the shuttle?!

Do you think this set can be ok (maybe more than one of them) to build a Space 1999 Eagle starship? Many pieces looks fine for that.
