We called it Haymakers Punch.
I drank gallons of it after working the fields growing up.

This is an electrolyte/ rehydrator similar to the modern Gatorade. Energy drinks contain caffine. Redbull is an example of an energy drink.

I would have used a cider vinegar, or maybe fermented it slightly.
Would be great carbonated too

My Mrs used to make a related version of this called sekunjabun. No molasses, but used mint instead.

Is there a recipe for Altoid production or mints in general? Just learned that Altoids have been around since 1780.

I have one more name for this to add to your many variations: People in the Bahamas (Bahamians) call this SWITCHER! I lived there for many years and that is where I first heard of it. I had no idea the rest of the world even knew about this "island only" drink!

as a cocktail drinker, the "switchel/swizzle" mention made my ears perk up. is this perhaps where the "swizzle stick" came from?

Max Miller brought me here. His video said that some folks use nutmeg instead of ginger and that, of course, is a Townsend signature spice

Not gonna lie…I love this! I added a tablespoon of organic lime juice. It will be two next time. My heaping TBS of Ginger was hugely heaping.

Another alternitive to maple syrup or honey wouldl be sorghum syrup. When my tummy is upset from the flu. I will sip ginger ale. As a kid it was flat 7 up or flat sprite which are clear liquids. However the ginger ale settled my tummy much better.

I guess that that adding sugar and water to spoiled wine was a good idea across different cultures?

Just made it. My god! Definitely adding this to my cold remedy. I warmed mine to dissolve the honey. Added lemon juice And apple cider vinegar (just a capful). It’s so refreshing cold; but warm was sooo goood! I can imagine it doing wonders with a sore throat. Doesn’t detract, but adding a shot of spiced rum to cup really does elevate it. (I used Kraken)

I made a jug of this this morning, and I really like it. The slight vinegar smell caused caution at first, but after tasting it, I found that it was purely delightful.

A good cold cup of birch water is good too on a hot day, although not as refreshing.

I purchased a bottle of switchel concentrate a couple of months ago from a local cider mill. I’ve found that adding it to seltzer water (I use Polar, in a variety of flavors) is delicious and refreshing.

Make it with lightly carbonated water and you have one hell of a refreshing soda. Lacks the syrupiness of modern sodas. It tastes a bit like a light ginger ale.

If you’re looking for electrolytes/Gatorade type drink, molasses appears to have way more potassium than maple syrup or honey.

I made a version of this all last summer but used a fruit vinegar I accidentally made when I pressed a fruit we call loquat in NZ where I am. One backyard tree pumped out about 20 buckets of fruit and so glad I blended and then pressed them out. It was a divine tasting cider but soured very quickly. It ended making the greatest Switchel.
