Bonus tip #6: More coffee. Medium roast pairs nicely with a 3.5 Java reed. Caffeine and Bebop makes the saxophone more fun.

Dear Dr Wally, Thanks for the great videos! They’re really helpful and make a difference!! I started playing as a mature player to get out of the house for a walk during Covid. I once had a pad fall out. I couldn’t find it for a few days. Turns out it was in my shoe lol. I decided to have lofty goals as to my practice habit, and it can be tricky to stay motivated. This video is very timely. I have for example WW vibrato exercise as a practice activity. I also have the idea of getting good enough to busk and give lessons to raise money for the ride to conquer cancer (and I’m well on my way). You have inspired me to do it!

I chose saxophone after seeing commander Riker play trombone. I thought it was a saxophone. Never made it to starfleet but I play/teach sax for a living now and really dodged a bullet with that trombone thing anyhow.

Thank you very much for this tips. I really sometimes feel bad about my sound quality, especially when I listen to youtube professionals. Your tip about not to compare myself with famous players is very useful for me

Another good video. My teaching echos what you say here. Especially the school music program which is geared towards competition. Students get all stressed and forget to have fun and actually dive into a great art form.

I trust that you were being sarcastic when you mentioned the big paycheck in your introduction. Music, in general is a wonderful hobby but a very difficult way to make a living. I would emphasize the benefits of joining a concert band or small group. That definitely made playing the clarinet and saxophone more purposeful and fun for me.

Dr. Wally, you just made my Day. I spent 40 years teaching Music in the public schools. All 40 telling kids that it is All for the love and passion For music. I witnessed so Many kids lose their love Of music because all they Heard from their director Was, " We have to go to State", or whatever. Thanks For the affirmation. nine Years retired and your words Still sound like music to Me.

I’m a keyboardist (many years). Started saxophone and applied knowledge to Keyboards too. My keyboard has a believable synth too. I lay down rhythm tracks and play sax to tracks. That’s fun; that rhymes!
