Thanks for the interesting discussion and suggestions. I ventured back to film 2+ years ago and after enduring the frustration of light leaks, faulty shutters etc. etc. with a variety of used, old film cameras (in various formats) I bit the bullet and bought an M6. In thinking about what lens to purchase initially, as my only lens at least for a time, I was most inclined to the 35 or 50mm focal length. I settled on the 35 which honestly, I felt as the best option as a compromise rather than a first choice. I found it interesting that you also use a 25mm quite frequently. I suppose the focal length allows the opportunity to include more context in your images rather than isolating the subject. Even the 35mm requires that you be quite close to your subject in order to create a portrait style image. Headed for Mexico soon and I intend to bring along my 35mm as well as a 50. Lightest travel kit I’ve taken in quite some time. Thanks for the videos, I enjoy them a great deal. Regards, Darrell -Charlottetown PE

Wonderful selection of market images matched by the stories. Interesting discussion about reducing the number of lenses in the camera bag and especially the tip about keeping all the images/frames in the same size for gallery display. I will keep away from eating Eels !

For travel I use one camera, one lense, one type of film.I use 35mm 1.4 with Kodak Tri-x 400 (or Ilford HP-5).I have a second camera with 50mm 1.4 and the same film pushed to 1600.I use this camera at night with also the 35mm lense (50mm is only for security).I always walk with one camera, one lense.

Here is mine: 21mm f/1.4 Summilux with Contax accessory viewfinder 35mm f/1.4 Zeiss Distagon 90mm f/2 Summicron Ilford HP5 Plus ISO 400 35mm black & white film Like yours, the 35mm is the main lens in my travel kit and is flanked by a wider wide-angle and a slight telephoto.

Kinda off-topic but I am curious: looking at your lenses, you seems to more often than not have a color filter mounted. Do you use this all the time, like to increase contrast in general, or for some specific situation? (darker skies? darkening cool colors in general, like the street itself?) Newbies like me may be interested in this topic being discussed in a bit more details

Rob, Thanks again. Your way of telling stories is an absolute treat to listen to. I like your tendency to present _your_ way, _your_ observations, _your_ equipment choices as not the _only_ ones. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience of printing for a show — what worked, and what you’d do differently next time. Your studio set-up for your videos is just GREAT.

Great talk and nice photographs! I’ve been around the world lots… my most used lens is my 35 f/1.4, after that it’s my 24 and 50. The 50 only if I need more standoff distance which isn’t that often. Good to see your channel growing!

Great crop and matt thoughts. Ditto for the "shoot with one lens" thought for rythm. Then again, if maybe you have 2 walls to cover where the viewer can turn, or you change the subject from landscape to people, I wonder whether you might be able to pull off the 2nd lens usage. Just a thought. But over-all, wow. VERY useful. Thank you.

I really like that you acknowledge the fact that we bring a lot of preconceptions when visiting a new place. I have never heard a photographer say it but it’s very true. I guess some speak of photos saying more about the photographer than the photo itself, which is a similar idea, but it needs to be said, like you did.

How timely! Going on a one month trip across Europe and the Middle East in a few days. I was set on one camera (Nikon S3) and one lens (Nikkor 35mm f1.8) but wasn’t sure about going for one stock (Ilford FP4) This pretty much convinced me that it’s not such a foolish idea!

In Street Photography there are two types of photographers; 1) The Fisherman or 2) The Hunter..

I absolutely agree with your recommendation that we stick to one kind of film on a trip like this, especially when it comes to colour films. When I went to China in 1976, I brought 20 rolls of Kodachrome 64 (KR-135-36), and had consistent results throughout. Another photographer with us used 3-4 different films, and when we watched his slides, the inconsistent results were jarring. I hadn’t thought that colour reproduction varied so much from one film to another. On your earlier remarks, though, I disagree: I think it pays to learn as much as you can about a country, and its customs, before you leave your home, especially if you’re visiting a police state.

Well-done! Liked, and subcsribed. I am glad that “the algorithm” recommended this presentation.

Two lens travel kit. Old undestructable Spotmatic with 8 element 1.4/50 (also known as the benchmark) and the P tread adapted 500 mm Tokina + Leica shoulder mini-tripod and balljoint, very usable triade. This is a powerful combi. After 50 years this combi evaluated itself.
