I would recommend against trying to pluck individual bristles out of a brush; all the bristles are seated in the ferrule together, and plucking one out can change the alignment of the others. I semi-ruined a Series 7 that way one time; it ended up with two distinct points. The solution is nail clippers. You can use nail clippers to cleanly cut an errant bristle right at the ferrule.

That was very interesting to watch! I‘d love to see you painting D&D Minis from the marvelous minis line, one time with brushes from the lower end and ideally the same model with mid- to high range brushes. A model with some more details while still really tiny as the minis are, would be awesome. Perhaps you find the time to show this to us. <3 One question: Did prices for Winsor & Newton Series 7 go up in price? I remember buying my size 1 only a few years ago for way under 15 Euros including taxes.

Awesome break down of brush tips and comparisons. You can get a lot of 40c synthetic brushes for the $28 spent on one natural hair brush. For those of us not painting for an income, this really will out way the benefits of a natural hair paint brush I suspect. Thanks for such an educational video. Much appreciated. Mon

Now that you have a microscope, I would love to see what various primers look like, how smooth are they? You could even spray the glass slides!

Hey Brent! Thanks for yet another interesting hobby video. While we are on brushes - what do you think about brush licking? Personally i find it pretty gross. Not doing it. Ever. But… I can see the advantage for a nice brush tip. Yet i alway wonder, if its a healthy thing to do. While acrylic pigments are non toxic (to my knowledge) they‘re still basically microplastic. Wouldn‘t that built up in your body over time and possibly bear unpleasant results? What does a professional chemist think?

It is also interesting to see the differences in the belly of the brush. It might be just me, but it seems like the natural fibers have more space between them in the belly, giving lots of volume to hold paint. The synthetic bristles looked more packed together.

My Kolinsky masterclass rolled into some super glue when I moved and didnt see I knocked it, had to cut half the hairs :,( I was so sad, now I just use it for washes and metallics.

Personally i only use synthetic brushes for metalic paints. The reason is simple metallic paints RUINS brushes doesn´t matter if they are synthetic or natural (don´t know if its the same with oils and enamels). So personally i would rather destroy a cheap 5$ brush, then a 28$ one.

From a long time inker and watercolor painter, additional things to consider. Pointing: the natural tendency of a brush to fall into a point. This is NOT can a brush be brought into a point by stroking it into a pointed arrangement with water on a surface. INSTEAD: if you are buying an expensive brush ALWAYS test pointing in this way in person. If the store clerk doesn’t understand the way/how to use school glue to restiffen the point for storage after testing, go elsewhere. With clean water remove the stiffening agent from the brush, load up a small amount of water into the brush then lightly tap the brush on your hand midway down the handle, don’t hit your hand with the brush tip. Do it a couple times, if it’s a good brush of its grade, natural or synthetic, it will point naturally into a perfectly sharp arrangement as the drop of water is flicked off every time. In this way you can find gem brushes even among cheap brushes. They might not last forever but at least till damaged you know they’ll naturally come to a point. If that W&N S7 had been pointed and tested first in a shop, you could have avoided the flaw it had. Fixing, cutting, and pulling hairs from expensive brushes is only something that should be done if it would be trash otherwise. A brush with flaws when it points will never operate like a brush properly selected and arranged into a natural pointing formation. It’ll look ok/sharp but the application mark might slip suddenly or the orientation of the point will veer to the side, its sharpness won’t be reliable compared to a properly made brush. One last note. Natural Vs Synthetic. Natural hairs from minks/squirrels that live in cold environments “kolinsky mink” have a micro structure that is more porous for insulation of the animal in cold, allowing MORE usable paint load to be suspended in the brush, you have to dip a synthetic brush 15-20% more often and a contiguous line won’t go as long, a lot more “crap, I ran out of paint!” Don’t get me started on snap and belly shape/length

Could you do a video like this testing out different brush soaps and looking at them under the microscope to see a difference? I’ve heard some soaps have different effects on bristles.

I watched the rehab video followed by this one and I have got to say this style of evidence based analysis with the microscope are packed with knowledge I would never know. Thank you for these videos and I hope to see more in the future for other miniature equipment. Curious what you could do comparing paints and what not as well.

I recently got a series 7 and it was one of the worst brushes I’ve ever gotten and I get the 50cent ones. I got a #2 and right out of the box on my first use it had so many stray bristles looked like alfalfa. I couldn’t it tame them. Then on top of that all the paint just got caught in the belly and no paint would go to the tip. The tip was perfect but that is useless when I can’t even get paint to come off of the damn thing. I returned it. Maybe I just got a bad one , pretty crap if my first natural hair brush was a bad one

Great video. Seeing the brush bristles under high magnification was very interesting. What jumped into my mind on seeing the images was, “a picture is worth a thousand words…”. You can immediately see the difference, especially when you showed the ends of a single hair and a single fiber. Thanks Brent.

I have 2 Kolinski Sable brushes, both from "The Army Painter", they are ultra fine and cost about $10 a piece, but when you need to get into the finest of details there is just no substitute. 90% of my miniature painting (I am new to this) has been done with synthetic brushes, I use Winsor & Newton Cotman/University 100% synthetic brushes for that. I have size 0000 to size 2 from Winsor & Newton. They are a top shelf name brand and are still 50%+ cheaper than Citadel and their brushes are better. I can tell the difference between super cheap brushes and my Winsor & Newton ones when painting based on how they "feel" when painting such as control, release, point accuracy, streakiness, and capacity.

Dude, thanks for another great video. But I bought da vinci Colinzky brushes size supersmall for like 12 bucks. you should stop buying overlypriced stuff from your warhammer store and only buy decent priced stuff from them. I really hate when stores and companies are trying to pray on happy and less knowing , unsuspecting happy costumers >(

You can buy three different size, Rosemary & Co. series 33 for the same price as that Citadel artificer small brush. I really wish people wouldn’t keep falling for their non miniature products.

Another update. Windsor & Newton has apparently changed their acrylic brush restorer to a new less toxic formula but it seems to work great for natural fiber brushes. It now lacks the dangerous vapors of the old version, easier to use indoors for small hobby spaces.
