I finished this recently too. Loved it as an adventure story, some remarkable insights in to the nature of providence and class as well. But yeah, some of the ethnocentrism and religiosity I found hard to push past. Still, context it was written I guess.

In reading these 19th century classics from Russia, England and elsewhere it is amazing often this work is mentioned in the novels or short stories just in passing as a gift, or on the table or putting the book aside as someone enters the room.

I read this decades ago for college and remember being on the fence about it then, probably a similar attitude to you, it wasn’t as bad as expected. The Friday issue does seem to be the thing that stands out for us modern readers, the idea of the savage and the master doesn’t sit well but the whole idea of survivalism is something that is appealing. I had forgotten a lot of it especially the whole beginning so thanks for recapping that, Crusoe had it coming basically

Robinson Crusoe was assigned reading for Junior Great Books when I was in 7th or 8th grade several decades ago. Being a young reader, much of the allegories you noted were probably a bit beyond my understanding. I do remember being glad when I got to the end of it. Also, I was glad it wasn’t as unappealing to me as Beowulf or The Song of Roland

I listened to a few reviews and looked at some of the comments and have been shocked at the negativity that many ascribe to the message of the story. It is unfortunate that many are attuned to seem to channel a perspective that is not gracious enough to see this great work for what it is, but rather project on to it expectations that it be something else.
